I have this bantam rooster, hatched him as a baby. I've also saved his life twice after dog attacks....BUT.....

Makes me SO MAD, that stuff hurts like crazy! He punctured the skin on my ankle this last time, and got my other leg too. He's got me 2 good times, drew blood both times. He's got the kids several times. And my husband a couple times as well. And to put it nicely I"M SICK OF IT . I'm so close to just getting rid of him.

What in the world makes some Roo's this dang mean??? I've never had one so mean.

Hi, I am new at chicken raising (this is actually my first post) and have a rooster that does the same thing. Oddly, he only behaves this way towards me. My spouse (also new to chicken raising) suggested that it is because I am showing fear. I have begun to 'flap my wings' at the expense of looking sane....but it is just getting worse. I was most attached to this rooster out of all 20 of our chickens...but I am about ready to cull. It makes no sense that I can no longer enter the pen without being attacked. I have a video of what he is doing but the site says that I don't have permissions to attach. I wish I could help you but all I can say is that you are not alone.

carry a broom and don't hesitate to swing! Maybe he needs to be knocked down a few pegs to realize who fills the feeder!

Awhile back there was a thread about giving a mean roo a bubble bath. Very funny thread but it worked lol. I can't search and paste from my phone but maybe someone else will.

Chicken Momma, how old is your rooster? Looking at other posts on this, it seems common for a rooster to behave aggressively when the hens begin laying. One of our hens did just start laying...which signifies when the rooster became...cocky.

Nab58, my husband was saying the same thing. He never gets 'attacked' by the rooster but went in the pen with a board when we were integrating our month younger flock. The rooster was applying the pecking order rather seriously. Also, the rooster doesn't even run at me when my spouse is near. I suppose I will need to find some bravery in myself and go in the pen with a board.

Sonia, that is nothing I could ever have imagined but it sounds as funny as can be. I am looking that thread up immediately.

Yep, that's the one lol. I'm almost hoping for a mean roo so I can try it ;-) all mine have been either standoffish or sweeties so far though.

Our rooster started acting that way at a year old. It got so bad that we made the decision to give him away to a local farm that doesn't kill and wanted him for breeding. He was biting me, my kids, and ripping apart my hens. He came close to taking out one of my hens eyes and I was afraid that would happen to one of my kids. Nothing hurts worse than getting attacked by an angry rooster with spurs! I've had roosters that were very gentle. I think if they feel that they need to be defensive for whatever reason they will be. Mine was a Sultan and He had limited visibility because of his crown of feathers. I would give him a pony tail to help him, clip them, trim his leg feathers, - he was a miserable ROO. Good Luck!

You are going to get a lot of different responses - some of them probably telling you to kill him.

When my Roo started getting aggressive, I would pick him up and carry him around the coop for a while. When I put him down, he would run off looking sheepish. Of course it's hard to do if you're scared of him. I would suggest just approaching him from the front, keeping an eye on him, and carrying a stick to keep him away from you if necessary. It all just depends on what you're willing to deal with.
