Hi there, my chicken has a very messy vent, lots of blood and it almost looks like her insides are coming out??? Any ideas? She has been sectioned off from the others for 3 days but I think she is getting worse. . . . .Please help xxx

Pedialyte (unflavored), clean the vent gently with warm water, dry well, Sulmet? Pray? I'm no expert, but you could start there. You might also try gently pushing the vent back in with a tiny dab of Preparation H ointment. Don't know, doesn't sound like fun. Hope all turns out for the best

Hi there, thanks for your advice. I'm going to try washing her and using honey to push her back in, I haven't got any prep H or anything. . .I'm presuming its a prolapse but don't know?

This is exactly what I just found in one of my EEs. First I noticed one of my hens had diarreah and that's what got me looking to see who had the problem. Then I noticed her vent sticking out! Scared me so I came in and got on the computer to see what info I could find. At least I am not alone in with this problem. I'll look around for some Prep H and see if I can help the poor girl out. Let me know how your hen does and I'll do the same.

Hi there, we got some Prep H last night and washed her and pushed it all back in. We kept her in the house in a dark place and have just got her up to find it has come out again. I don't know how many times we should keep trying before we give up? I'm gutted and the kids will be gutted too as its there favourite chicken. . . . .

I got Prep H last night, washed the area and tried to push everything back in and it wouldn't stay, it just kept coming right back out! She doesn't have diarreah this morning and she ate her breakfast, but her vent is still red and protruding. I will try again today and see if it will stay put. At least she seems to be acting ok although she doesn't like being by herself:(

Hi SuburbanChickFarmer, how is yours doing today? We've just had another go but its not staying in this time. I think we need to let her go but it makes me so sad. I think we will try again tomorrow but after that its not fair. Hope yours does better? We might take ours to the vet on Tuesday, we can't cope with killing her ourselves.

When I checked Amber before bed, all looked good. I checked her again this morning when I let her out of the hospital ward, and again, all looks good. I am going to keep her isolated until she lays an egg and then I'll go from there. Do you know if when this prolapse happens, do hens normally stop laying? Amber hasn't laid an egg for 3 days. I have no idea if she has been laying an egg a day but I would guess she has. I usually get 2 or 3 green eggs per day and I have 3 EEs so I would assume she's a pretty regular layer. She is 11 months old.

Hi SCF, hope Amber is OK? We sadly put Mavis to sleep this morning, very sad, but I couldn't cope seeing her in such a bad way and she was beginning to peck herself and make it worse. Hope Amber gets better soon!
