Very New...Help

Awww, cortezkid - she looks so darn happy in her little nest! She's a cutie.

I know how you feel. I do not need even one more chicken, but then when two of mine went broody.....well...... I just couldn't resist and gave them eggs. And now I have adorable little almost 4 weeks old peeps running around. I am SO happy I did it. And the mamas are happy too.

Give her some eggs!!!

I will probably try again to help her figure things out....but I may just give haer an egg and see what happens. I have several roosters running around so I would suppose the eggs are fertile. Good grief I would sure hate to have her sitting a egg that wasnt going to hatch...that certainly wouldnt help her much!

I think I posted the wrong pic huh? However, You can see the light in her eyes and the big ol smile on her face (beak)

Hi There! I am about in the same situation you are. I moved into a house about 1 1/2 yrs ago and it was over run with chickens! Over 40 that we counted. We managed to get rid of them and got down to 5. (We also free range ours) Usually they lay in the hay, we moved the nest to a plastic tote on its side and that has worked well. We have the one that keeps sneaking off and I just don't have the heart to take the eggs from her once she is established on them. Now, I let her hatch them and then stick them, with her, in the "nursery" after she hatches them. Once they are old enough to tell the boys from the girls, we rehome the boys. It worked great with her last litter. We now have 4 extra hens that are now laying and we are collecting those before they get the idea to sit on them! She actually showed up with 13 babies last night. So, the cycle is on again!

We now have 2 roos and 6 girls & 13 babies! OMG 21 chickens total

I here your pain, Last year we managed to get down to 2 hens, one Rooster. They promptly began laying eggs in the neighbors barn....next thing you know we have two hens running around with 12 & 13 lil ones. Seems on their own they can reproduce like bunnies.
(chuckle)

I chased our lil hen out of her new nesting spot this AM and tossed a feed bag over top of it. Guess I will see how she conquers this when I get home tonight. I bet she figures a new way around my efforts!! I am mighty impressed with her diligence.

Since she started brooding the other hens will no longer lay in the same barn with her. I found a laying spot in another barn, but I dont think it is the same group of hens......I am going on a egg hunt this weekend!

Quick up-date.
Last Friday eve I got home and moved our Lil Broody Hen off her nest for a couple hours. I placed an egg in her nest for her return.

Saturday mid afternoon I found she had left the nest long enough to eat and whatever.....

While she was gone another yong Hen entered the barn thinking she would lay an egg in the same nest.......NOT!
The Broody Momma cam on the run, chased the younger one out of the barn and got comffy back on her nest.

I have decided to simply let things play out. The Broody hen does get off the nest while I'm not home during the day so she is eating.

I havnt found where the other hens are laying though so I am down to getting 1-2 eggs a day out of the other barn. (buggers)

Just having fun!!
