Hello all! I'm very new to raising chickens, turkeys, and rabbits. This year I'm doing it all, mostly for meat and eggs but I don't mind having them around for company.

I currently have 10 layer chickens, 24 turkeys and 6 rabbits.
Needless to say I'm in over my head with the turkeys and have had blackhead strike once and I'm fearing it's going to strike again.
Anyway, that's a little bit of me and I'll post pictures of my birds soon.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sounds like you are very busy there with all your animals!! I'm afarid I'm not a turkey person but please do drop by the turkey section. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/20/turkeys I'm more than sure the experts over there will be able to help you with all your turkey questions.

Wishing you the very best of luck with this new venture in the future. Enjoy BYC :frow

Thanks to the both of you, I've been lurking for a while and I thought I should join.

Hi!

Welcome!!

Not too familiar with turkeys, yet have thought about raising them. We have a small flock of wild ones that venture on and off our property but don't stay long due to the coyotes.
How do you feel their eggs compare with chickens?
What about their temperament and behavior versus chickens?
Don't know what blackhead is...??? I'm assuming its not good...so for that, I'm sorry!!!

Chickens can be carriers of Blackhead disease which effects turkeys. For this reason some folks do not coop or let them run together. You will find more information if you put "blackhead disease," in the search box, and also ask questions on the turkey threads at "Other Backyard Poultry."

Hello, I'm not too familiar with them myself as its my first year raising them. They have a very odd personality that can get you easily attached to them! Not good when you wanted meat birds! Temperament is very good as of now, they do tend to scuffle every now and again but nothing major.
As of now I have zero eggs, they are only 12 weeks old and very curious.

Blackhead is a protozoa that attacks the liver and Cecal. I've successfully treated them with metronidazole but I'm afraid it might come back and destroy my flock.

Definitely why they have blackhead, chickens used to run the property before the turkeys as I did a run of cornish rocks this year and last year.

Live and learn!
