The backdoor tot he eggs has wire over it.
My entire property is surronded by 6' solid board fence, hotwire and I have 8 pit bulls and a patterdale terrier. Predators NOT a problem! : ) So I tend not to think about that aspect.
As I raise OEG and American Game, I tend to need pens big enough for just one to 3 chickens at a time, so this is plenty large enough if moved about to give new grass.
I too, thought the shelter part was lacking. I think I would build a larger wood "house" with perch inside, and let them perch on top, and that would protect the bucket below.
As to bucket size, my gamehens (large fowl) can fit just fine into the typical five gallon Home Depot" type bucket... but some hens are really huge, so they would need something bigger, I guess.
It was not very heavy, I could def drag it myself and I'm a crippled old hag that walks with a cane!
