i have two chickens in the city in my backyard and one of them makes very load noises in the morning around 6-6.30. So far I didn’t get complaints yet, but I’m worried the patience level of my neighbors will be reached soon. I’m probably responsible for it myself since I always give them some special grains for breakfast. Usually not that early but since they know it’s coming the load one demands it right when she wakes up. I tried to put out the grains at night so they have them right when they come out of the pen, but she doesn’t get it and it doesn’t register of a fresh batch of grains. I still have to put out more before she stops. Does anybody have a suggestion how to stop it or retrain them?

Hi. :frow

Take some fresh eggs to the neighbors you are concerned about and explain to them that you accidentally created a monster and you will be working to change it over the next month if they can bare with you and if they even have issue that if they come talk you are working towards a resolution and want to be a good neighbor.

Then the retraining... chickens are creatures of habit, any change can take time and cause complaint. I would NEVER leave grain out over night because it attracts rodents and maybe other predators. Stop with the morning grain and do ONLY standard feed. Start doing your special treat maybe in the evening if that will work for you. I don't take mine out until about an hour before dark so no one still in the lay box gets left out. They do now the routine... so most all day long I can walk out the door without being ran down by the whole flock. But come closer to that time of day, every time they see the door open they come running... the whole lot of them. :love

Another possible option... making the coop darker in the morning, by adding a tarp or shade cloth, some kind of curtain or something. It may or may not help, but chooks can see UV and also see the light several hours before the sun rises.

Chickens can be loud. They are such individuals. Hopefully your neighbors have dual pane windows and don't sleep with them open.

Good luck getting it licked! :fl

I have a couple that can be noisy in the mornings and I will go out and tell them to be quiet lol. I typically don't let them out or give them any special attention until later in the day since I'm in an urban setting and have close neighbors. I used to let them out earlier until I saw that they would then get all worked up anytime someone walked past the coop or went outside. Hubby sometimes takes pity on them, but thankfully he doesn't do it too often...
