very sick Chickie

Quote:
The grit that is in pellets is only enough to help with what's in pellets. But if they eat anything at all more solid than pellets (grass, vegetable treats, etc) they need actual grit. Do you know what type of pellets the other chicks are getting? Perhaps the label will say?

Good on the mud drying.

As we have a very humid climate here on the Gulf coast, we get the same issues - plus heat. It's all very maddening, isn't it?

The crop sounds pretty good. Using some yogurt and vinegar might just clear any of that up. And her leg being better is very good news.

Today, she is very weak and not standing at all, my husband found her on her back and put her up right, he was going to put her out of her misery and then she started to drink on her own. Most of this came out in dribble though, and now she has just eaten some pellets by herself, she looks so sad that one momment we think should we cull her the next minute she seems a little perky, she is definately trying to stay alive, we really thought she would be dead by now.
When do you know if its best to put an end to it?

awwww bless her heart! poor thing *crys* well the opening and closing of her beak is because she is gasping for breath. i have had many chicks die from aspirating but they where really little, they would somehow get water up there nose and in there lungs. they would gasp for breath. i think we saved one or two after aspirating but most of the time they died. do you think that is what it is?

I'm just wondering - did you try any yogurt, any vitamins, any of the follow up vinegar to correct the crop? If her crop was stopped, there were poisons in there and as long as there was nothing done, nothing was really corrected so she will just sadly decline.

She is still going, I made up a mixture yesterday of apple baby food, oats, honey and natural yoghurt and in a separate bowl some tuna, she has been eating it by herself and some pellets. so that seems good. But she does keep falling over.
She doesn't seem to gasp as much today, but what obe10 said makes sense about her having water on the lungs that is possible.

I am going to the pet store today to see if they can help.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Have you checked to see if anything she is consuming is moving through? (so if the crop is emptying at all)
Are you in England?

She is still pooing, and they look normal so i'm assuming her crop is ok?
Her toes on her feet are curled, thats why she is having trouble standing.
I bought some chicken tonic to go in her water today it is full of vitamins, so I hope that will help.

Yes I'm in England.

Often vitamin deficencies are involved in illness and leg weakness (specifically the curled toe symptom you spoke of in your last post) can indicate a deficiencey of the B vitamins- specifically riboflavin (B2) with the curled toe >see here:
http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/206930.htm
and Thiamine (B1) for leg weakness (there are additional links at the bottom of the above link/article)

the poultry tonic you spoke of may not sufficiently address this so I would look for a specific Bcomplex supplement (you may find in the bird section of your petstore if your feed store does not offer or use one for children).
