We gave a healthy hen to a friend, she weighed about 4lbs 2 months ago, almost 2 years old. She called, said the hen was sick. She doesn't even weigh a pound. She is balancing herself by leaning on things. No strength to eat or drink. brittle wings. We see grey bugs on her skin.

Last night we dosed her with Ivermectin paste mixed with water. We had no idea what to do. Today, we are feeding her with a syring. Water mixed with apple cider vinegar. Mashed pumpkin and butternut squash. We have covered her in DE, then bought Poultry Protector and have just sprayed that on her. We have also mixed probios and vitamin electrolyte with water and fed some to her.

We have seen one dead worm in her stool his morning, it was about 3 inches long, round in shape.

She is barely hanging on and we don't know what else to do. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We bought wazine 17. It says to use 2oz in 2 gallon for 100 birds. How much would we give for 1 bird?

Bumping this. Good luck!

i don't want to give you the wrong advice.but if you wormed her last night.i think i would hold off with the wazine.if she is that weak her body can't take but so much.i'am sure that someone on this site with more knowledge will help you.give her some sugar water and make her as comfortable as possible.good luck.

Do not worm her now. I am not sure IF there is a repeat for Ivermectin. For Wazine its dose wait 10 days dose again.
Yes she needs time to recoop some strength.
Keep her comfy, vitamin water, high energy foods, cooked eggs, mealworm, and see if you can start the eating going. Tons of TLC and hopefully she is strong enough in spirit to over come all these nasties she has. Poor dear girl...hugs to you and miss Hen. :)

Thank you for the help, She did make it through the night and we are very thankful! She, Sugar, is unable to stand. She does not seem to have any strength in her left leg. She was standing yesterday but balancing herself by holding her head against the wall. Today, she is unable to stand, yet she is moving her head and opening her eyes. I even heard a very faint sound come out of her when I was giving her water from a syringe! She was not doing that yesterday. So positives in one way, negatives in another.

Could be some of the weakness today is from the wormer doing its job...will she eat??? Keep trying to get her to east and drink...cooked eggs / mealwroms would be great--lots of protien,
Kepp up the good work and I am praying......:fl come on Sugar you can do it!

maybe you need to ask your friend.why they let her get in this bad of shape.if they couldn't take care of her they should have given her back.

Sugar passed tonight. Our friends feel horrible. They are new to chickens and hadn't been picking them up. Since her feathers made her look so big, they had no idea she was loosing weight. She was eating, regretfully the worms were getting most of the food. This was a hard lesson for us all. Sugar will be greatly missed. Our friends are diligently reading and researching flock management and are taking huge steps to make sure this never happens again. We also have learned much. Thank you all for your suggestions and prayers. I know from this point forward we will know even more on how to protect our precious feathered birds.
