Hi everyone.
I have a 6 year old RIR that has not responded to anything I’ve done in the last three days to help her illness. I started with horse wormer on Friday, along with ACV in water. This morning, I dosed her with metronidazole.
This started a couple of months ago, she had clear fluid dripping from her beak at times, head shaking occasionally, AND was having trouble swallowing. I inspected her mouth, discovered white patches and a terrible smell. I took her to the vet, who diagnosed her with a bacterial infection. She was on antibiotics for 10 days, things seemed better. She also went through a complete molt at this time, which probably didn’t make her feel great either, but she was clean and alert and eating/drinking.
Which brings me to Thursday, when it was time for our monthly health check in. I pick everyone up, make sure they are good. Betsy was not okay. It seemed she was just skin and bones. I went to work right away, I made eggs for them, oatmeal...grapes and sunflower kernels. All the favorite snacks. Betsy was interested, but wasn’t able to swallow much. Attempting, would result in shaking her head and flinging clear mucus from her beak. The white patches in her mouth are back. So is the terrible smell.
I feel like I have failed her, does anyone have any suggestions on getting nutrition into her? My husband and I tried a syringe with rooster booster, yesterday but both times ended up with more of it on us because of the head shaking. My vet does see birds, but I won’t be able to see him until tomorrow at the earliest.
I don’t want my girl to suffer. I already feel awful, and just want to give her a chance.
