Got this very odd egg this evening. Peggy lays daily. She is a Maran, just about 3 years old. She lays green eggs and we've never had anything like this before.

Is there anything to worry about and has anyone else seen something like this? More to the piint, was your hen OK after laying it?

Thanks

Usually it isnt anything to worry about. Our hens have laid some really strange eggs to.

I just looked at it and that was the first thing that came to mind. With the shell cracked like that I wouldn't attempt to hatch it. Would be fertile if a roo was around. I get the occasional weird egg. My eggs with tails have also all been without a shell though.

Wow, that is a picture for the weird egg books. It is probably just a bip or mistake in the egg laying process. Here is a good link about the egg laying process along with other odd eggs:

It is odd that she is a Marans who lays green eggs. Was one of her parents an ameraucana or easter egger?

Hi. Thanks for the link. I'm less worried! Yes she is a Marans but she must have Ameraucana in her (she came from a mixed flock) but she looks 100% Marans but lays these beautiful (and large) olive green eggs.

Thanks for all the replies and for allaying my concerns.

No roo around, so no danger of any dragons!!

First thing I thought of when I saw it was a Wee Willy Winkie night cap!

We've had no eggs since this. Should I be checking her in any way? She is very active and completely normal and isn't a daily regular layer (3 years old). Seems to be nothing untowards but I am just slightly concerned that she has not laid since. We think there might have been a soft egg at one point because I found traces of yolk in the nesting box. Her leg had some yolk on it but her vent was completely clean.

She may be experiencing a reproductive problem, common in a lot of laying hens. They can have problems with the shell gland part of the oviduct, or develop infection. Sometimes the eggs, whole or just yolks, instead of going down the oviduct, will be deposited into the abdomen. Below is a diagram of the oviduct:
