I have a very weak newborn chick that I've given electrolytes to but I don't have grogel to give it. It seems to weak to eat and isn't walking around or moving much. Anything homemade I can do?

Sick chicks can be difficult, especially one as small as a serama. How old is it? Just keep in mind that chicks often don't eat until 72 hours old.

Try getting electrolyte mixed with water and dip your finger in it, leaving a little drip on the tip of your finger. Move it over to the tip of the chicks beak, and it will likely peck at it. Try to get her to drink this as best you can.

Hard boiled egg cut up very, very small is also a good thing for her to eat that will give her a boost.
Sometimes I mush up chick feed with some warm water, and get them to eat that too.

Just remember not to force anything into the chickens mouth, as they can easily get it into their lungs.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply. It can't even hold it's head up on it's own. :(. Every hour or so I carefully dip it's beak in electrolyte water. I just warmed raw egg yolk and mixed in some electrolyte water to dethicken it. I gave it a bit with the tip of a syringe and it seems to have a little more energy. I might be delaying the inevitable but at least I tried.

Trying is all that you can do. Feed often, make the chick comfortable, and keep it warm. Lots of times sick chicks like soft things to snuggle on. I had one sick chick once who liked a soft cotton glove to snuggle against. Whatever works.

Good Luck!

I wanted to report that raw yolk mixed w sav a chick seems to be helping. Chick is sitting up some and holding head up a little. I give it a 50/50 chance now when earlier today it was 15/85 it would live. Using a small syringe helps a lot. I also have been holding it in my hand all day when I can. It likes being snuggly. I even snoozed w it in my hand this afternoon. I hope it makes it!

try some Polyvisol infant drops(NO Iron) 1drop 3 X a day - put it on anything he will eat- It's available at Walmart if you can't find it in a drugstore. Will he eat some plain yoqurt? You can also use it to moisten a finely chopped egg yolk - wish you luck
