VET Rx?

I have used it on a few occasions, I view it like Vicks vapor rub. At the first sign of respitory blipps, I rub it on their comb and wattles and then dab a drop under each wing. most times it clears right up if it isn't something serious. I don't find it to be a harmful medication in many ways just a little home remedy kinda thing.

When I use it on the cleft in the roof of the mouth (the choanal opening) beneath the eyes and to clean the nares I do this:

Put a tiny tiny bit of hot water in a cup. Put several drops of VetRx in the very hot water. Stir with something non-absorbent. That cools the VetRx to a nice warm temp and allows the oil and water to mix.

Then I use a clean q-tip end for each spot and a new q-tip for each bird.

I swab the nares to clean them (wet q-tip). I press a very wet q-tip into the choanal opening gently to get the fumes up into the eye's sinuses which drain into that choanal opening. I clean beneath each tear duct. I will use the remaining on a sick bird under their wings or where they put their head when they sleep at night so they breathe it in.

Think of it as being chicken Vicks Sauve. If you think of it like that you will use it correctly.

In addition to the Vicks I have used in the water for very sick birds so that they treat themselves as the oil sits on the water. When they drink they coat their beaks. I only do this for very sick birds personally.

I have used once for a suspected eye-cold or eye-worm. It made me feel horrible to do it but I have to say that an the use of terramycin ointment thereafter healed the bird's swollen conjunctiva (and one sneeze). I put the VetRx under the eye thereafter.

You can use it straight on the nares and in the mouth if it's labeled as such. I just never have because it's wonderfully concentrated and strong enough to take dilution.

I don't dislike VetRx at all. In fact it's worked great for me as a feather
picking treatment. I just cringe when I see people trying to use "treatments"
as "preventatives". There is a fine line there.

Agreed! I'd love to hear how you used it to prevent feather picking - I hadn't had that issue, but hear of it and would love another alternative for people if you don't mind?

Thanks, hon!

<--- afternote: don't mind me, I'm southern and do that some times. /blush

I've had feather picking issues at times in my brooders and when integrating
birds into my main flock. I just rub some VetRx on the picked bird's back and
the others will usually stop picking. They hate the taste.

Oh Purple, you're just bad (in a good way)! LOL

Well ok - I should have thought of that... VetRx = nasty taste. Dur! Hmmm I wonder if that can be turned into something to prevent pecking wounds by putting it near (not in) the area full strength.... Blue cote - well it seems to turn things really purple.

I don't know about others' birds, but it seems that to my birds "different = try to eat it". Purple = different.

The squeaky dusty wheels in my brain are turning. Slowly. But turning...
