VET Rx?

Just so you know Vet RX is more of a suppliment not a medicine. If your coop is dusty just use plain old water to mist it down. I would not use antibiotics unless you know you have a disease present. In the long run this will cause more problems for you and your flock.

Most medications will hurt your chickens more then help.

No, using VetRX as a precaution is not good. Many don't like the
product even when a chicken is sick. I use it for feather picking only.

You are saying you want to give them VetRX and Tetracycline as
some sort of preventative??? That's insane man. They will only
build up a resistance to both and when they get sick it will be bad.

The best things to do for your chickens health is feed them a good
quality feed, give them a vitamin supplement in the water, a touch
of garlic or apple cider vinegar in the water, and fresh vegie scraps.
Free range them if you can too so they get bugs.

Vetrx is just herbs and camphorated oil
this was originally called "save the baby" and was used in homes to vaporize the people when they had respiratory disease

as for eating the eggs it is safe
I think the company has to by law say not to eat the eggs

I remember when the now owner bought the "save the Baby" company and called it vetrx and put it in large and small bottles for animals and birds

it is a very good thing to put on the head and eyes and rub it in
put under the wings and also put 1/2 tsp vetrx down the throat of the congested bird

also add 1 tsp per gallon of vetrx to the water

it is very safe

as for antibiotics
duramycin and terramycin are really worthless as to cleaning up hard respiratory diseases

better to give the birds a wet mash probiotic and some Vit C disolved and put in the wet mash

any questions email me

VetRx isn't a medication. But it is usually used as a supportive measure for colds and whatnot, and I highly recommend it as such. It will have absolutely no effect on eggs or meat. Not that you'd eat a sick bird.

But if you use it as a tonic or for healthy birds (it helps with dust related respiratory problems from beddings at shows, etc) the same - you can use immediately after using VetRx. You could yourself take VetRx. When I've had a cold, I consider it believe me!

As for terramycin, no - there is a withdrawal time as there should be with all antibiotics. Use their eggs to feed the chickens some treats so you don't waste the. Cook and freeze them for later use if you want for the birds.

By the way, I'm not a real big fan of terramycin. I really think the better meds are Tylan injectable and LS50. Antibiotics should always be used ONLY if you know for sure that the illness is respiratory, and then if the antibiotic is the right one for the bacteria (not virus, not fungi, not environmental cause) for which you're treating. Then only at the right dosage (not the "well i gave 2 teaspoons" dosage - but figured right off the package for treatment, not prevention) and then at the full strength, never "a bit or a sip of", and then for the full number of days - not one day short.

There's such a serious problem with antibiotic resistance. People all too often just jump on the antibiotics, especially terramycin, for anything. So take caution.

That's why I prefer to start using products like VetRx, probiotics, vitamin support, nutrition, environmental correction, etc first. Antibiotics should be your last resort when you absolutely HAVE to use them.

The only real precaution against disease is biosecurity, and not using antibiotics indesciminately, and hygiene.

While I very respectfully* disagree and personally love VetRx for helping chickens breathe if you're treating them for respiratory conditions with a medicine (which VetRx is not), I >>>so absolutely agree<<< with not using terramycin as a preventative.

I can't stress that highly enough.

That's a practice that is used by big poultry houses and is (justifiably) under attack and, if it's any good, is only good for their way of doing things which is immensely different from back yard poultry keeping.

Alternately you could do it, and then risk not being able to use Terramycin when you REALLY need it to treat because it was misused. It's that important to be judicious with antibiotic use. Use it only to treat - never to prevent.

* I think there's plenty of room for both Purple's and my opinions on VetRx in the chicken world.

We just have two differing opinions on this matter.

Do you have to dilute it when you give it to them in the mouth? And it goes in the eyes also? Dosent the camphor hurt the eyes? Just wonderin how its supposed to be used. Becasue i have some..

I don't dislike VetRx at all. In fact it's worked great for me as a feather
picking treatment. I just cringe when I see people trying to use "treatments"
as "preventatives". There is a fine line there.
