Vet Vent!

I understand what your saying, Had the same type of problem with my cat, then I was talking to a freind and she told me about a vet that makes house calls, great guy, best vet I ever had. All I can say is keep looking and ask around you might have a hidden jewel you just haven't found yet.

For prescription products, like heartworm prevention, the company must have approval from the vets office to dispense it, the vet can decline the request.

Change vets... your dog should not have to get another heartworm check unless his first one was positive or he hasnt been on meds regularly since then..

Does your dog have health issues? My dogs go in once a year unless they have problems that many visits is overkill unless he has something that he's being treated for.

You should get a GREAT book that tells you how to find and get the right care for your dog at the vets. It's called "Speaking for Spot" it's written by a vet and is an awesome resource.
I saw this vet speak at a benefit for Canine cancer and she was incredible.

I highly recommend it for any dog owner. I wish I would have had it before i lost my dog to cancer a couple years ago...

Good luck..

I buy all my pets heartworm and flea preventative from this site you do not need a prescription. I save alot of money by doing it and buying the off brand. It is the same active ingredients but you will not have the guarentee that is suppose to come with the heartguard if say you bought it from your vet.

I understand the vet problem the one I went to before was way overpriced and wanted to do everything to my healthy puppy. Thank goodness I finally found a good reasonably priced one it now costs half the price it used to for my dogs to see the vet.

Personally, I feel that vet's prices are right up there with human doctors!
Thats just crazy that they won't let you order out. The vet I used to have, never had a problem, that's why theres companies that do sell for less.
I believe they are only trying to make money. Especially in these times, when money is so tight, you'd think they'd have a little compassion, huh?

I use Safeguard horse wormer for my dogs. It works like a champ for less. Safeguard is safe up to 3x the recommended dosage. I use Wally World's flea products. However, I also use Durvet's Permethrin on my dogs. It is cheap and very effective.

I've had that happen with my vet too. As I understand it though is that heartworms are a different story....they CAN'T be given the meds if there is any possiblity they might have heartworms or it would kill them...which is why the vets office requires testing every 6mo's for it and their own record of how current your pet is on the preventative. I'm not familiar though with the difference in price between the vet and online. What I remember the last time I checked into it, it was the same or more to get it online once you added shipping.

That's true if you use ivermectin on border collie type of dogs. My three dogs are LGDs. Safeguard is fenbendazole not ivermectin.

Yes, you can buy Safeguard and Durvet at feed supply stores or Tractor Supply.

Be very careful with this.. I've known of dogs dying from this... especially certain breeds.
