Vicious Chicken

tracey.hanson :

I am new to keeping chickens and I have two 23 week old silver link hens which I was told are a hybrid breed, bred for friendliness and egg laying (still no eggs though).

Just in case she doesn't see your question, Mahonri.

It's late. Soon I'll be able to hide my own Easter Eggs.

At 23 weeks Silver links should be laying... and regularly.

I thnk she just got them- and the attacks started soon after- it's still within acclimation time for a new home for the pullet.

I'm not familiar with the attack behavior, but I suspect she is dominant and is protecting?

I had one that did that. I used some advise that I read on here and it worked. YOU have to become the roo! Next time you are in the run, squat down and wait for her to start getting aggressive. Then quickly reach out and pin her down. You have to push her to the ground. And with the other hand pinch or grab the back of her neck like a roo would do. Don't let her up until she submits to you. I did thid and I have not had a single problem since! Good Luck!

The first little egg arrived yesterday, so hopefully that will be the start of the egg production line and they can start earning their keep!

They are about 25 weeks old now.

Thank you for the advice, I'II have a go at holding her down when she gets into attack mode.

Hello - I have been keeping pet chickens for 5 years without any behaviour issues (until now....) I have 7 chickens, one, i've had as a chick (she's 5), 4 are ex battery hens (approx 2 years old) and 2 that I have recently taken in from a friend who could no longer look after them (3 years old). My latest additions settled in well, pecking order established without bloodshed. However, one of the new ones has taken to attacking humans. She fluffs herself up and just goes for you. You can push her away, and she'll just turn round and square up to you again, pecking at your legs and feet. I am at a loss as what to do - never experienced this before. Any helpful advice would be most appreciated x
