Victim of Chicken Math

wondering how one just "finds" a chick in your yard.. heh, cute.. i miss the chick stage.. they are just soooo cute.. but i love my year old hens more than anything..

We live in a fairly rural area and nearly all our neighbors have chickens. Due to the sneakiness of some peoples hens, there is also a population of "feral" chickens is the area. They roam the neighborhood but don't really belong to anyone. For example this summer there has been a flock of 4 (3 hens and one rooster) that habitually roost in a tree in the back of my property every night. All three of the hens have hatched chicks in the last month. And I agree they are so stinkin' cute!!!!!! But I am happy with my current ladies and not looking to steal littles away from their mamas.

Anyway, the lost baby probably came from the feral population (although it is always possible that a neighbor's sneaky hen had just hatched a clutch and not been discovered yet...). My husband had seen a hen in our yard early in the day, with three newly hatched chicks trailing after her. In the afternoon, the mom and other babies were gone (we looked but never found them again) and one little guy had been left behind.

And that is the story of how King Henry II joined our family :D He now lives with my in laws with a bunch of hens (and 2 humans!) that adore him.
