Video of the Ostrich and Emu chicks (They are getting BIG!)

Great video, man those ostrich chicks are outpacing the Emus by leaps and bounds!

I too have camel on my list of things I eventually want, but I want a Bactrian one with humps spaced out enough to ride without a elevated saddle

I love my camels, but I have to admit that I am jealous of those with a Bactrian with a nice evenly space set of humps.

The emu and ostriches are very different in their behavior. There really isn't a lot that is similar about them, other than their obvious upright posture and of course we know they have common ancestry from before the continents broke up. The ostrich are much more conscious about what they're doing and move at a very slow purposeful pace. Unless they're spooked, then they quickly bolt much in the same way a horse would. The emu are always running every where and even though they appear much more confident in their actions. In this situation the ostrich chicks are the leader and the little emus follow them every where. I assume though this is due to the massive size difference and the emus tendency to follow something larger than itself. They get a long very well and sleep together in a pile at night, with the emu sometimes crawling underneath the ostriches' wings.

Please let us know if the day comes that they can't be pastured together anymore. If I could pasture Emu/Rhea with Ostrich.... would make life a lot easier.

And I take it the camels are easy going and don't try to kick/stomp the birds? I would never trust my Donkey around my young birds. Then again my Donkey is a real pain in the azz (but then again she is my baby and I love her)

Omg that is an awesome video. Thanks for sharing! How much property do you have and what state do you live in! I love all the animals together out in the "pen". Amazing!! We live in Easton we have 3 ostrich in about a 1 acre pen. Had a bunch of emus in with them at one point.

Young camels do stomp and wrestle as a part of their play and may chase smaller and larger animals. Once they calm down and mature they're quite mellow around almost everything. There's exceptions though to everything and one of my camels was raised with an emu as a baby and she just loved that bird to death and was very gentle.

I'll keep updated and whether these two species are still getting along once they reach sexual maturity. It will be interesting to find out. Right now they do everything together and there's been no problems.
