Your welcome.

Hi, I'm new to the forum. We just moved to Augusta county this fall and will be getting some hatching eggs in January. We are also looking for some Guinea fowl. (adults or keets).

We are designing our coop and I'm wondering about the winters here. Do your chickens wander outside much in the winter? Do I need to make the coop large enough for them to spend several months inside? We were thinking of having a small hoop house that they could use during the winter. Any photos or things you would do differently when building your coop, would be appreciated.

Thanks
Heidi

The winters aren't to bad though sometimes it can rather cold. Mountains do see a lot of snow. I built mine large enough for them so spend a week or so inside and not come out but the weather has only been that bad once. My chickens seem to like foul weather -_- weird little things. Usually there are cold snaps and ice storms

Thanks everyone for the welcomes.

I think we are going to build a coop big enough for them to roost and lay eggs and have a covered hoop house for them too. If we need to, we can water and wind proof the run. During good weather we want to use a portable electric fence and pasture them. The Guineas will be free ranging, as we want them to eat as many ticks as possible. If that doesn't work, we will build an addition. We want to build something smallish, so we can move it in a pickup to a new house. We are renting while looking for some land to purchase.

Are there any breeds people found to not be hardy enogh for Shd. Valley? We are getting hatching eggs for Blue laced red wyandottes, blue orpingtons, and welsummers.

I'm looking for anyone who has Guineas for sale too.

riane'smimi, would you happen to have any Silkies for sale? I'm thinking about starting another small flock of them. I live in Greene County, so I'm very close
