Crap. I slipped and fell on my butt twice while putting the chickens away tonight. sheesh. fell pretty hard. everything was iced over and wet and I chose poorly on my shoes. dang-it. I am going to feel this in the morning. jammed my wrist the one time and torsed my shoulder pretty bad the second time...bugger.

Wow - hope you recover . Better get some of them little ice cleats that slip strap on bottom of shoes
or sprinkle cat litter/sand where you walk .

Good idea about the ice cleats. I need some too. The entire driveway has been iced over today. I have a hunch that we will have a lot more ice and snow this winter. Glad I have cold- hearty breeds. My coop is not heated.

Is anyone making any special provisions for tonight's cold snap? I cleaned out the coop and added and extra deep layer of fresh pine shavings. I also added weather stripping around the main doors. Still worried about my girls, but trying to avoid firing up the heat lamps.

I also have an unheard coop, and am kind if nervous about the wind-chill. We ended up shutting the vent window at the top hoping it would keep more heat in tonight (and prevent those freezing gusts from coming through all night). The coop was open all day today, so I'm hoping one night without the vent window won't cause moisture build up.
We're new at this. We have 10 chickens and they are all cold hardy, so we are keeping our fingers crossed. I also made sure they had extra food today.

I did. Put vaseline on all combs...including the EE who has a pea comb. Gave them an extra scoop of scratch before roost (cuz the corn creates body heat). Have two chocolate orpington bantams in a separate pen, had to really protect it from the wind. Piled hay around the entire circumference so wind wouldn't reach them. Also built a small nesting box to fit in there (she's not old enough to lay yet) in case they get really cold...both the pullet and cockerel can go in the box and snuggle up for warmth. Piled hay all over that too.

Can't supplement heat because I don't have electricity out there.

Edited to add: I put Vaseline on their combs to prevent frostbite. The vaseline protects the combs.
