Question for all the 'swap-ers'

How do you keep purchased chicks comfortable and safe while walking around Gilmanor??? I've had 'bad luck' the 2 times I've gone with getting chick to survive. I almost always loose 1 or 2 within a day or so. I'm planning to pick up a couple of somewhat expensive chicks this year and I want to be prepared to give them the very best chance possible.
Any ideas/tips???

Also, a question for sellers. What would your reaction be if I asked if I could pay you and mark the chicks I wanted - but not pick them up for an hour or so????

Debbie, if you're getting chicks from us, we can hang onto them till you're ready to leave. i'll have broodies and a generator for the heat emitters too. (got 3 broodies right now, if they'll stay that way for long enough without chicks). zip tie bands are handy for that sort of thing, for short term ID. I can plan a tote just for sold chicks too, if needed, that have been marked and paid for.

Finnfur - what do you do for water for the chicks?

for transportation, I don't worry about it... they usually do just fine for a couple hours when necessary. Everyone will have water at the swap but water while travelling just makes a big mess.

AS Karen already stated a couple hours your good-
longer road trips like when I went to SC to pick up some Delawares it was stop every couple/three hours -
some food / water and check on temp conditions.
At my age it wasn't a problem because I need to stop too LOL

bring cut up apples for them to peck at...that will usually tide them over while traveling

the largest swap in the state, held twice a year, first Saturday in May and third Saturday in September each year, held at Gilman farm & feed on chewning rd in Glen Allen VA... you can google them for an address or phone #. swap starts at 8, setup around 6 (or earlier for some).

Oh! The apple idea is GOOD!
I asked this on another site and someone suggested using the bottom of a waterer stuffed with wet cotton balls.

I wasn't PLANNING to do any shopping this year... but then those cream legbar chicks came along - LOL!
Also looking for some Deleware and some Polish chicks (as long as I'm buying chicks.....)
