LOL! Definitely a teacher :)

Mealworms are not hard to raise just pretty time consuming if you want enough to feed chickens. Easier just to buy them! ;-)

I appreciate the kind words about the site! It's the first one I've ever set up so it's not perfect... but keeping up with the blog is going to be fun I think! I'd really like to make the blog page more interactive like in the form of a discussion forum but I guess people could just reply to the posts if they wanted to interact and ask questions. I don't know. Thanks! :)

LOL the reason I asked your web page had a young one walking down a road .
Just determining on what level to talk chicken.
Not familiar with your breeds as we struggle with one - the Delaware.
Your not to far from us so when /if we do worms we will look ya up to get a supply to start the process.
and welcome to the thread - enjoy.

I'd be glad to help! The website below has a lot of good information!

Hey guys long time no communicate. Anyway, I have been having a hell of a time with a neighborhood fox. The second I think Ive out smarted him he beats me again. Long story short I need some hatching eggs. I know its not the ideal time of year but I cant wait for eggs for almost another year and with only 5 girls left to give me eggs for the winter I am going to rush to hatch out some chicks and get them started before winter hits. So if any of you can help. I would prefer local pickup throughout Virginia and/or Maryland but will also buy online and have them shipped if I need to.
What Im looking for:
Mille Fluer d'Uccles
Barnevelder/Barnvelder
Isbar
Cream Legbars
Bielefelder

So either rare breeds and/or color egg layers. Or any of the darkest brown egg layers.

I guess open to anything that will give me a unique color basket.

Thanks for any help guys
I strongly suggest buying a laying hen or a pullet about to start laying. Getting eggs, atleast a week to three weeks, hatching puts you with baby chicks late October into November. Then 5-8 months depending on the type of chickens and how many will be roos? Buy the time they are laying winter will be long past. Buy laying hens or about tonstart laying pullets at the TSC parkinglot swaps. Look for 5-18 monthers. Lots of milage left on an 18 monther English Orpington, and a 5 monther costs less and will start laying at winter onset. Infact all chickens will cost less now than during the summer because people that are over loaded with laying hens want to scale down before going into the cold weather. That also looks like a pricey shopping list to ask people to gift to you so I hope everything works out for you. I gift and rehome to those that I am well familiar with. I dont gift to people whom ask for my best. I gift my best to those that need. I really hope those that know you come through for you. Good luck.

I looked at getting pullets but can't find any of the breeds I want.
I have never been to a swap so don't know where when or how they work. Could someone give me more info? I'm in northern VA.

Oh and I don't want anyone to gift me anything I want to buy eggs. And yes I know it is the opposite time of year then most people hatch but I really like hatching in fall and have had good luck.

. Phone your closest TSC and ask them when they hold their parkinglot animal swap. wish you well. Do you not have a roo? You said you have 5 girls left. Good luck, hope all works out for you.

Actually stagering hatches can be good if you don't want egg production to go zip during molt. That is what we plan for future hatches.
Good luck.

annabellaknits,

I have a barnyard flock and have been hatching all season, I actually have some that are about a week old and some that are in the incubator. I would be willing to ship for $3 a doz + shipping to northern VA if you were interested. Some of the breeds that I have are RIR, Barred Rock, Leghorn and a Delaware. The rest of my flock is mixed and I have been getting primarily Black and Red Sex Link birds with some Reds thrown in. Let me know if you are interested and PM if so.

I know this is a little late. I'm in Orange VA and I hatch this time of year too. 32 egg babies in the bators right now. I don't know where you can find those breeds local to VA or MD but if you're interested I know a lady here in Orange that sells Andalusian eggs. She has Beautiful birds and they are GREAT layers. She owns Woodlawn Farms in Orange VA.
