Hey all!
Just found this site and I have Many Many questions, All new to raising chickens. I live in the Culpeper - Warrenton area. where do I post questions about breeds best for newbies and egg layers and eating? So many different types! want to start with an easy breed thats good for eggs and meat and can take Virginia weather.

Thanks
Jason

Jetzon, since you asked and I'll offer an opinion as an SPPA member, I would respectfully ask that you promote a heritage breed, in your quest for eggs and meat.

Dominiques are among this country's oldest breed, it's a fairly good layer, but if you have a flock of hens you will always have big brown eggs for the table.

I've heard Dominiques can dress out at 9 lbs or so. If you're looking for bigger birds, you can find the Black Jersey Giants, or Black/Buff Orpingtons.

Wyandottes are a good choice for meat and eggs as well. Plus, Wyandottes have a Pea comb which is less prone to frostbite in those rare Virginia sub zero temps in winter time. Dominiques have a rose comb which lies close to the head and doesn't frost-bite too much either.

I am a member of the Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities (SPPA), so promoting rare and endangered breeds of Poultry are my personal obsession. You also get a warm inner feeling that you're promoting the same birds your great great great grandparents raised when this country was made up of more farms than cities.

Check out the following breeds, Dorkings, Orpringtons, Wyandottes, Faverolles, Jersey Giants, Rhode Island Reds, Delawares and Plymouth Rocks. Note that the breeds with Single Combs are vulnerable to frost bite, but are manageable.

So that's my two cents worth, not sure if it's helpful. Before making a purchase on poultry please visit the Culpepper Fairgrounds this coming Saturday. It'll help you get an idea of breeds. You can get good birds for a good price. Beware though, sometimes these birds are not the healthiest, so be smart when you buy.

Hey all!
I'm new to the forum, and also new to Hanover County, just north of Montpelier. My first flock of chicks are arriving next week, and I'm SO excited! I live on 55 acres, and we keep 6 Belted Galloways (soon to be 7.. waiting on an expectant momma!), 3 TN Fainting goats, 1 (soon to be 2, another soon to be momma!) Alpine goat, 5 horses, 4 hens, 1 roo, 3 cats, 3 dogs. Just waiting on 37 chicks! Brooder is completed, hopefully the fuzzy butts will make it safely.

Always looking to connect with people in the area.. hope to get out to some shows too, if I get some show-worthy individuals! Anyone going to the VPBA show in Glen Allen in May?

Hi folks, I'm not in Virginia. I'm clear across the country in Washington. I'm looking for anyone near Check, Va. in Floyd county that has had some experience mailing eggs. Please pm me if this describes you and let's talk. Thanks
