Still haven't got that totally straight myself. So many conflicting definitions. As I understand it Auracanas have the tufted cheeks and rounded rump, Americanas have more tail and less or no tufts and ees are anything that lays colored eggs. Input from all you experts out there?

IWe have a small flock of purebred auricanas currently being squired by our blue copper Maran/A uracana roo. Theoretically their offspring will produce olive green eggs. 2 test batches have hatched some really pretty chicks w over 50% looking like they will be lavender or a soft grey. We currently have18 fertile eggs in the incubator and due to hatch in 2 weeks. Would be glad to swap/sell eggs or chicks. We're still looking for a buff Orphington roo and a few more hens, buff Brahma pullets or hens and 1 or 2 more Auracana pullets and hens. We're in Bedford and travel to Culpepper, C'ville and Staunton fairly often. Let us know if you're interested or even if you just want to talk chicken. Always interested in comparing notes. Lori

first, purebred means the rooster and hen are the same breed/variety... so crossing a marans with a bird that lays blue eggs, is NOT purebred. that's an easter egger/olive egger
second, depending on what your hens really are, Araucana, are tufted and tailless... see pic below...

Ameraucana have beard/muffs and a tail. the only APA recognized color varieties are Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten and White. anything else is likely a mix. Thus, an Easter Egger.

pics of my own easter eggers are a few posts back... yes, they lay blue/green eggs, they have tails and are bearded/muffed, and they may have the correct conformation of an ameraucana (i don't know) but since the colors are wrong, they are NOT ameraucanas. my roo for sure isn't one. LOL but i still love them for their personality and egg color.

How do you tell if a bird matching all the breed characteristics is an ee or purebred? Do breeders work with specific bloodlines? I see a lot of references to specific farms/breeders but not specific birds.

So the weather has been crazy lately and my yard and the chickens think it is spring. My chickens have been eating so many bugs that they are not even touching their fermented feed or the scratch!

You're not alone. My daffodils and hostas have started coming up, and with all this rain my grass is starting to turn green again. This past weekend when the weather was warm we had tons of honey bees and mosquitoes!!!

How do you tell if a bird matching all the breed characteristics is an ee or purebred? Do breeders work with specific bloodlines? I see a lot of references to specific farms/breeders but not specific birds.

Well the birds must have all specifics that the Ameraucana Breeders Club has set fourth including being 1 of the 8 recognized colors and they must breed true at least 50% of the time. Hi everyone I am still here trying to not drown

this rain is driving me crazy I even feel sorry for the ducks

I am looking forward to this year so much and can't wait to crank up the ol bators and start pumping out the chicks The swap schedules are out and the birds are all gearing up for breeding (my ducks are driving each other nuts) I am hoping to expand and add a white egg layer breed as well as American Buff Geese, A new Duck breed (leaning towards Runners), a new Bantam breed or Cochin variety and I would like to get a trio of purebred rabbits to breed for meat and to sell also going to buy a Boer goat I know it sounds like I am going nuts and adding a bunch but most of the new ones will be replacing others I have already sold or will be selling soon

I am trying to decide which breed of white layer to add if you have any experience with LF white egg layers please go to the thread and add your two cents

I like the Anconas and the Dorkings but not sure if they will meet my needs
