I recently called the local p.o. to ask questions about shipping/receiving chicks for Va. She said there is nothing preventing imports or exports, nothing special to do other than they have to go express and be in the proper chick/chicken box. The only thing I saw on the website was that newly vaccinated for Newcastles was a no-no. I'm not against nor for NPIP but I'll admit that I shy away from the prices people tend to charge based on the status. I don't mean to step on toes or anything, but I equate it to SQ vs non SQ- you can still have a great bird even if it isn't SQ/NPIP. Otherwise culls would never be sold right?

the PO rarely knows or cares about requirements...

as for npip, that's just good practice IMO. it doesn't prevent you from selling anything. but it might require a bit more work, if you want to add birds to your flock that aren't already npip certified...

I got a response to my request for the publication of NPIP from the State Vet office. The link that she provided is a national database for those who are NPIP and the testing that is covered. This is good information but some States, e.g., Texas provide poultry sellers with a certificate for sales with out the flock being NPIP.

WHile this is good information, it does not answer the question of those vendors who are approved to export poultry adn eggs to Virginia. Here is the response:

On this website anyone can click on a state and it will bring up the participants, their address and phone numbers, along with what breeds they raise, and what classifications they have (ex. B- Multiplier Egg-Type Chickens
C- Multiplier Meat-Type Chickens
D- Turkeys E- Waterfowl, Exhibition, Game Birds, and Backyard Flocks
F- Ostrich G- Primary Egg-Type Chickens (Breeding)
H- Primary Meat-Type Chickens (Breeding)

The commercial Subparts are:
B- Commercial Table-Egg Layers
C- Commercial Meat-Type Chickens
D- Commercial Meat-Type Turkeys
E- Commercial Upland Game Birds, Waterfowl, Raised-For-Release Upland Game Birds and Raised-For-Release Waterfowl

I'm a newbie just today. I'm in Spotsylvania.

I have had 30 chickens since I started raising chickens in 2011- just got 25 more TSCo pullets, am expecting 30 more chicks tomorrow and 25 Runner ducklings next week! Its the cool personalities that gets you hooked!
