! We live very close by! What breed(s) are you going to be keeping? As for advice, if you're building your coop and run, definitely check out the various designs that others have built or bought. We bought ours for about $800.00...worth it, considering the cost of materials and the time it would have taken us. Consider the predators or other critters you may want to keep out. If you are in Fred, I'm assuming you will be keeping them in a run and not free ranging? Check out our coop/run set-up. It might work well in a in-town setting. Part of the run is covered and part is "open" (with the wire on top). We have since added hardware cloth as a 2nd barrier inside, just in case. We'll also be expanding the run, shortly.

that coop and pen looks awesome but i would add some welded wire to that weak chicken wire. chicken wire keeps chickens in not predators out. we have some hatching eggs now. black australorp, ameraucana ee, and cubalaya if you still need some, pm me.

Hello everyone! I am new to BYC and keeping chickens, we are just getting into the idea of keeping chickens. My boyfriend and I live on his family owned dairy farm in Floyd, Co VA. I would looooove any advice on how to begin chicken keeping and building a coop. Also if anyone is close to my area I'd really like to maybe get together and discuss chickens.
Look forward to seeing everyone on the boards!

I thought I had mentioned adding the additional wire. Sorry if I missed that part! The chicken wire is on the outside, with an interior layer of heavier gauge hardware cloth style wire. There is about a 2in gap between, so reaching in or out would be tough for mean critters and silly chickens!

I am sorry it took so long for me to respond. But, HELLO! and thanks for the warm welcome. I am not sure what breeds I have. I have 4 small beautiful Roo's, a barred rock hen and a RIR. I am pretty sure my others are mutts. I would like to up load some pic and ask others to help me identify them. But, I am not sure how to do it just yet. In fact I am not even sure I am responding to this thread in the correct manner. I would like to come visit you. How far away from Fred are you? You can give me a call and we could talk. I am DYING to find a person to build me a hen house in the next day or so. I think the chickens are too cold outside. My number is 407-729-1173. Give me a call!

Hi From the Eastern Shore. Yes it is part of Virginia, just have to take the Bridge tunnel to get to this little slice of the state. Or a boat across the bay. Got back in the chicken game after a long hiatus (30+ yrs ago) We currently have 5 Ameracaunas, 6 Old English Bantams and 4 mixed breed laying hens from the livestock store(I forget what he told me the breeds were already). Still working out the kinks with my coop and run. I let them free range some but have had hawk issues as of late, lost two birds. Looking forward to hangin` out with you fellow Virginians and everyone else as well.
