Glad for all the swaps, I couldn't find all the breeds I wanted on craigslist or thru word of mouth so this morning I ordered chicks from Chickens For Backyards, I can only have 10 chickens in the city so I will have to sell some of what I ordered (already have 4 and one that might be a roo that may have to go!). I ordered more to lower the shipping plus I figured there were people out there like me trying to find some specific breeds. I am not sure when the chicks will be shipped but these are what I will be getting that I will have "extra" if anyone is interested let me know. I am not asking for anything more than what I paid for the chicks. They are all supposed to be pullets. I love in Roanoke City but do travel some to Lynchburg, Martinsville, Blacksburg. Radford, so if you are interested we can meet some where!

Isn't anyone else on this list near Culpeper, Warrenton, or the north side of Fred'burg? I'm actually in Goldvein, along 17, right at the southern tip of Fauquier County. I am converting my laying flock into barred rocks this year (after a few years of experimentation with mixing chicken breeds!). I am also raising Salmon Favarolles. This year 3 of the 5 ladies are setting (after I hatched some eggs in the incubator). I also am trying to establish a flock of blue egger Americanas.
I usually get about a hundred chicks each spring to sell, and this year I got barred rocks, New Hampshire Reds (I've had RI Reds, but not NH, before) and silver penciled Wyandottes. Those are also totally new to me. By late summer I will have sold off the extras and the rest will be the laying flock.
I hope to make at least one chicken sale this spring!

If anyone is interested in Dutch bantams, I should have chicks in the next 3 to 6 weeks at the Franklin and South Hill swaps. Most I will let feather out a bit before I bring/sell so I can pick out my breeding stock for next year. So far I have CLB and am working on getting a few BCLB.

Good for you, raising chickens in the city! I even looked into having poultry on a military base (no way) but now we're retired and I'm back to having chickens. You have quite a variety there. I have tried Welsummers two years running but this year only have 2 chicks-I'd buy your extras if we were closer!
Every year I ask my husband for another chicken structure for my birthday. This year I'm asking for a grow out pen. April is the perfect month for a poultry person's birthday. Last year he made me a brooder for the garage. I love it because I can keep an eye on the chicks everytime I run out to the freezer.
By the way, my poultry have had trouble with coccidia and the state vet said no hard freeze means parasites are going to be big this spring. I've already had to treat some birds for with corid.
So watch out for that, if you've had birds on the same plot for several years running.
