Visceral Gout ??

2-Year old Hen with both feet swollen. She wasn’t limping, walking fine but I noticed the swelling and separated her to heated barn. Feeding warm water and watermelon hoping to flush out her kidneys. Appreciare any advice.

How long have you noticed the swelling? Can you see any swelling in her hock joints? Would it be possible to get another picture of her standing that shows her feet, toes, and ankles? It can be hard to tell articular gout from bacterial or viral arthritis sometimes.

What do you feed your chickens? Gout can have many causes including heredity, feeding high protein diets, too much sodium, dehydration, mold exposure, and others. Some have said that using sour cherry concentrate has had a positive effect on gout. Here is a good article to read:

its like it happened overnight. I visit them 4 x a day. I didn’t notice by limping But just the oversized of her legs and feet. I feed ADM Egg-maker which is normal 16% lay feed HOWEVER this year I have been adding meal worms several times a week to help five others that decided to go into molt in January with temps in the teens or below. I’ll get another photo of her standing And read this article.

Here are several more photos. I read the information and replaced her water with sour cherry concentrate (2 tbs in 8 oz water). there are no pink/infection looking areas on her feet; they look very yellow. she’s not sneezing or wheezing or shaking her head. I appreciate your help and info.

ugh....I will call the vet in the morning and hopefully get her in. Posts 7 and 9 look the same to me and when I compare to hers I can’t tell the difference...

watermelon and sour cherry concentrate seem to be working...looks a bit less swollen today; definitely not more swollen. From the info I’ve read, thanks to your help, I have a mix of younger heritage breeds with a few older ISA Browns. I noted she hasn’t laid an egg while in medical, which, of course, may be from illness. But I believe because she is more than likely done laying, I will need to switch to an “all layer” feed with oyster offered and no longer an “egg maker” feed. I’ll update more in next few days.
