They definitely don't eat much! Nice that the hens are repaying you for your kindness!

Welcome to BYC from California!

What a blessing to have the visiting bantams gift you with their eggs, and a little hen decide your place is a safe haven to raise her family.

I don't know what I would have done (to my flock) had I not have found BYC. I have found invaluable information to assist me in doing the right things and extremely helpful folks when I didn't check here first and needed to fix what I'd done wrong... Plus the community of chicken-keeping people comprised of outstanding individuals who are supportive, informative, funny as heck and just available to me when I needed input and response. Some of the best friends I've never met are on BYC.

Good luck with your visiting banties!

from Louisiana! Glad you joined! Even though horse feed doesn't have enough protein in it for a chicken it's great a temp food source. Let her brood her eggs. Doesn't sound like the neighbors give 2 figs about their chickens!!

where about are you? I've got redtailed hawks around me and they cleaned me out of bantams and young LF birds. I've had to stop free ranging and build a run with netting over the top. I sure hope nothing gets your visitors. It is so easy to get attached to them. Good luck with them and keep us posted as to what happens.

This is a response to farmdude.........

Guess I don't know how to frame a quote, but here goes anyway............

I am in northwest corner of New Mexico. I talk to all creatures who come here, greet them, thank them and tell them what's OK and what's not acceptable. Gradually Nature has come to realize that this is a safe place for all of them. It's quite fascinating for me to see what has happened over the course of 8 years. When I moved here, there were only ants for 2 years. Now there is an abundance of "life" and I welcome the idea of some chicks and just hope it will not get too cold too soon so that they can survive and be well. Have a talk with your redtails next spring....!!

So are you a Shaman? After 13 years of free ranging, I suddenly got bombarded with predators of all kinds.(Hawks, racoons, foxes, owls, etc.) Almost all my chickens & ducks were killed.I asked the Universe for their protection and the carnage continued.

I now keep everything locked up for their safety. I love nature and refuse to kill predators. I lack the knack you have to talk to nature and have them respond.
