Vitamin D problems - Layer pellet recall

I took my bantam Cochin to the vet yesterday because she's been having a hard time walking and even standing without losing her balance. My vet suspects a Vitamin D problem caused by the layer pellets. Purina recently recalled their layer pellets due to a Vitamin D deficiency. http://www.therepublic.com/view/story/0e7e8f96f8ee4f85ba12b799883b4927/MO--Poultry-Feed-Recall

We use Nutrena, but my vet says too much or too little Vitamin D can cause the same neurological symptoms and many manufacturers use the same sources. We've also had some problems with weak shells. My other chickens seem fine (other than the weak shells), but since the affected hen isn't much of a ranger, the theory is she doesn't get the supplements the others do from bugs and plants.

I've called Nutrena to see if they've had similar complaints, but so far they haven't.

My hen is now on supplements, antibiotics and homemade food. I'm really hoping that Vitamin D is her problem and it can be corrected, but there's a chance that there's another cause other than nutrition.

I wanted to let others know about the recall and see if anyone has had the same issues with Nutrena. If anyone else has seen similar symptoms in their chickens, what did you do about it?

Thanks,
Sharon
