I cannot speak to giving an IM medicine via the mouth; I wouldn't think that would be a very good idea, as it's intended for the muscle. I've never given a chicken an injection, but wouldn't have an issue doing so, as I've given them to other critters. You just need to make sure to expel any extra air in the syringe; I typically draw up just a tad bit more than I need for the injection, and then push the plunger until some of the liquid comes out. Then, you're good to go! I've hard the breast muscle is the easiest place to do the injection.
