Vodka for chickens?!

Tinctures are valid medicines. 100 proof vodka is 50% water and 50% alcohol. Fresh herbs, roots, or dried roots are put in a jar and covered with vodka. This is left for 6+ weeks. There are water-soluble and alcohol-soluble nutritive and medicinal constituents in plants and this method separates them from the plant and they remain in the liquid.

I have heard of using tinctures with animals. I make and use plant medicines including tinctures and have for 40 years. But not knowing how poultry would respond to the alcohol, I would probably not use tinctures myself except topically.

At the end of 2019 I had what I now suspect could possibly have been covid...

After approximately a month I went too a doctor that confirmed I had a virus but covid wasn't mentioned here in UK until March. She proscribed me an antibiotic but said at the time it was unlikely to help as antibiotics don't work with viruses.

I had found information on various tinctures and decided too give them a try.
I went for the comfrey tincture and what with having the virus plus taking this tincture I was hardly able to stay awake. I really do feel this tincture helped because after over 5 weeks of a nasty chest infection totally blocked sinuses along with a very painful throat and esophagus slowly but surely my chest was starting too release the blockage. It still took months for the pain to ease

Therefore this has given me a little faith in some tinctures. As for using them on chickens I don't have a clue so I personally wouldn't risk it.

It was a magazine. As @ChickyChook22 mentioned it’s the magazine Grit. Specifically their guide to raising chickens. I think I got it at Walmart. But I’m pretty sure you can go onto Grits website and find their back issues.

I realize all of this now. It was explained throughout the thread by other members here. But thank you for your input. I appreciate it. I haven’t tried this recipe but still wonder about it. I had never heard of tinctures before so the idea of them shocked me at the time of making this thread.
It does sound odd, for sure, when taken as individual ingredients. Sounds like you're basting a chicken from the inside. Or making pickled eggs? LOL

So... this article is straight up suggesting I use vodka and herbs as a remedy for respirator illness in chickens. I believe herbs can work but to this extent? Has anyone ever tried this? It’s making me curious but I don’t want to harm my chickens either. I know you dilute the vodka but it just sounds weird to me. Would it also work as a preventative like the article suggests?View attachment 2541356
could I pls ask what book this is? id love to learn more about treating my chickens naturally

I believe it’s from a Grit magazine. I don’t remember what issue and couldn’t find the magazine. I usually save them all but I have moved house since posting this originally. But you might be able to find the orginal article on their website. Grit was the only magazine I was actually subscribed to. So I’m pretty sure that’s where it’s from.

I make a tincture of vodka, green olives and a bit of olive juice, shaken with ice. I use it as a prophylaxis against worms and, so far, my doc says it's working.
Careful, some might take this advice seriously and start a tic toc challenge. Is this how the Tide Pods thing started?

I did laugh. Almost as much as when one of the local weed activists began using the term "family farm" to defend against tightening restrictions on the regulation of the product.
