Waht to use in the run?

I have bult my coop. I have a place in the garden where it is perfect but it is muddy. I have layed some pavers so the coop wont root in the mud. But I did it so the inside of the run is mud. Should I put in sand? Or is it ok as it is.

The chickens wont spend all there time in there as they will be free range when Im at home

A lot of members build up their runs with sand- it drains well and fluffs off the hens' feet when they come inside.
It's so nice to have a good run, especially if you decide to cover it to keep it dry- you'd use it even when you can't free-range the birdlets!
