I don't know what I'm doing either. I'm going to try to move her tomorrow - in the afternoons, she's been getting out of the nest to dust bathe and eat and someone else goes in and lays an egg in her nest. Then the broody goes back and sits in a different nesting box!
I hope I can successfully separate her. She's sitting on 6 eggs.
I have two broodies. I put 4 eggs under one and 3 under the other. We moved them from the coop to a small tractor, then one moved to the same box as the other. Now they are both sitting on all of the eggs. I have no idea what I'm doing either, but am also waiting on the 22nd. Good luck, everyone!
Super Fluffy didn't lay another egg today so i'm thinking she might be satisfied with 9. Talked to a friend with an incubator and he will gladly take any abandoned eggs and try to cook them the rest of the way. It's all over but the waiting.
OK. So we are now down to one week. My kids check on our broodies every 20 minutes after they get home from school. I haven't even candled, but I assume the ones that are going to hatch will hatch anyway. I have NO idea what I'm doing, but my broodies seem to be happy to have eggs to sit on...
I have a broody hen in the coop that I gave 5 fertilized eggs to. Unfortunately they all went bad and she abandoned the nest. She is determined to hatch something so she now sits on 6 unfertilized eggs......
I have my incubator going and I have 2 developing in there and maybe 2 more but can't candle through the dark shell. My question is this: If I want my broody to raise the developing incubator chicks what is the best way to get the eggs under her? Or are my odds better to leave the eggs in the incubator until they hatch and then place the chicks under her? She is a first time broody (7 months old). Our day temps are around 60's but night time is dipping into high 40's. Any thoughts?
