Hello out there, I'm new to this chicken world and loving every minute of it. I'm just sittin here waiting for my fry pan to heat up so I can fix fried eggs( or "poke eggs" as my 3 and 4 year old call them). All I have are about 9 week old chickens and I am just longing for some nice fresh brown eggs.- Staring at that box of thin white God knows how old carton of commercial eggs. I really want all chicks to hand raise but am now considering getting a chicken that is already laying for the eggs...Good idea? Bad idea? Any suggestions?

I say, be patient- your chickens will be laying you eggs, soon enough. If you decide to add an adult, please read the posts concerning quarantine and biosecurity. Also, an older chicken is going to pick on your little ones...Next year at this time, you will posting wondering how to use up all your eggs!! Enjoy!

Lol... Its very hard to be patient! And I kinda got into chickens by accident... on a whim. And only did my research after I got my chickens. When I got them, I thought a chicken was a chicken and thats all. I didn't know about all the different breeds and layers and bantams. So I got one silkie( so darn cute!) and three others that I have no idea about the breed or sex. So, I now love them and would never want to part with them but I don't even know if they will produce eggs- They could all be roosters for all I know. THAT WOULD STINK

If you post some pics, I am sure you could get some help identifying them... If you only have three chickens, and you love eggs, you probably do need more!! Just remember to keep them separate for at least 30 days! Didn't anyone tell you chickens are like potato chips? You can't have just one, or three!!! Good luck!

Thanks Lesa! I will definately have to get some pics.. I'm not that good on the computer..lol.. I'll have to get some help from my 17 year old sis...

LOL, i know its so hard to wait!

But i would wait , unless you can be certain the adult bird you get will be disease free, OR she could get your other girls sick.
