Wal-Mart shake-up??

That's weird! I just got a call today to go in for an interview to work at Walmart. Unfortunately I can't work there until I'm done with this semester at college, but the lady on the phone said I should have a good shot at getting hired for the summer.

I can put in my two cents. The reason I would want one of ours closed down is because local gangs hang out there. In three years there have been two murders and multiple robberies in the parking lot. I would not want it shut down so people lose jobs, but so they can remain alive.

I understand that position, but to want it shut down because it "killed mom and pop" stores? The mom and pop stores can't hire hundreds of thousands of people in a localized area. I realize it drains on that area, but think of what it brings in! More people into that area, which brings in more revenue to the entire community. Wal-Marts donate money to local and nationwide charities as well as create awareness about other programs.

I just can't see hoping for anything to be shut down...especially when so many people depend on the work to keep themselves and their families fed and clothed.

I guess I'm biased because I'm seeing it from the view of an employee, but without Wal-Mart, I'm afraid that even more people would be without work than there are now. Wal-Marts around the country may be despised, but in my eyes, it's a way to increase jobs.

This fear is what my husband, father, mother, FIL and well just about everyone I know has been faced with for over a year now. I guess Wal-Mart has some catching up. All I ever hear about is how so and so lost their job, had their hours cut or reduced. My husband now does twice the job he used to. His department used to have 10 people in it and now they only have 4 and the work has picked back up from when they made the cuts. There are no cost of living raises or bonuses for the past 3 years. There are always rumors flying around about who is gonna get fired next. We are just thankful he has a job at all.

This has gotta end at some point.

I did five interviews today for cashiers. The ONLY reasoning I can come up with is that they are trimming the excesses in order to keep as many other associates as they can inside of the stores.

We have a HUGE WalMart distribution center here and it employs literally hundreds of people. And the pay is well out there too. It is just the one store in Victorville that I think should be done away with. Move it somewhere else up here. And all our mom and pop stores HERE do fine. Most of them are frequented by locals who don't want to deal with box stores.

See, the ma and pop stores do just fine in Claremore too. The elderly group simply do not want to deal with the traffic in Wal-Marts. That is perfectly understandable. I frequent the smaller stores too, because I know the people there and because they have better deals on food that is getting ready to turn.

I suppose I'm just sensitive right now, because I see people that I work with every day and the realization that one day I could walk in, get handed a pink slip, or be told that someone else did just scares and saddens me.

I do know that Mandy lives in a VERY rural area, and it is likely that a Wal Mart showing up probably did put mom & pops out of business. Especially because many in her area unemployed or low income and really need the lower prices. It's a 50/50 for me on that one. WalMart gave more people jobs, but took a livelihood from others.

But, they probably also gave the people that ran and worked in the mom and pop stores a position higher-up in the store.

I can definitely understand both sides, please believe me when I say that. But hearing people constantly say "I wish Wal-Mart would burn" or "Wal-Mart needs to go" hurts. Because Wal-Mart is not just a company. It has a face, several hundreds of thousands of faces, all needing it as much as a diabetic needs insulin.

Yes ma'am I certainly do understand that. Personally I prefer Target as they provide a more quality product in clothing. Just MHO! However, without that WM distribution center up here our unemployment rate would be closer to 18% rather than the 12% it is now.

ETA: I always enjoy chatting with you!
