I have a New Hampshire chicken that got pecked pretty bad, but we were able to clean up her wounds. It’s day three and she still cannot walk. Any advise?

(this is her before we cleaned her up, but it shows how she can’t stand.)

When we first brought her in her right foot was twitching like crazy. I held her up to see if she could at least stand, but her toes would curl under the rest of her foot. Her foot stoped twitching, however, her toes are still curling.

Did you witness the attack? Sometimes if chickens show signs of lameness or imbalance, they will be attacked by other flockmembers. It is hard to see from the picture how bad her wounds are? Can you describe if her tail or vent are damaged? The leg twitch and curled under toes sound neurological, and might be from a back injury or it could be that she is showing signs of Mareks.

First I would make her comfortable, and feed her food and water throughout the day. You can try positioning her with rolled towels, or try making a chicken sling to get her upright. She can sit in that to eat and take her our when she sleeps or frequently to stretch. Here are some examples:

She’s 4 months old and very high up on the pecking order. If I slightly move her leg she’ll pull it away. Her winds have been cleaned and we put some poultry aid on it. I mixed some mill worms in with her regular feed which is dumar pellets.

How long have you been feeding layer pellets to her?

I agree, I would try the B complex and see if that helps. The initial foot twitching, then curling of the toes, I would lean toward something neurological. You may want to add 400IU Vitamin E daily for a week too.
