Want to improve egg quality. What to look for in feed.

During winter season when grass and weeds are scarce.

I buy a bale of Alfalfa hay,
and toss some inside and under my raised coops.

as soon as the snow melted and the birds started free-ranging again.
So as already stated, your feed formula is likely not changing. Its chickens natural foraging that improves egg quality.
Here in northern Michigan winters are long for a flock confined to a coop and outdoor freedoms cease.
What I do extra is buy a bale of second cutting alfalfa hay. This does 2 things. Supply's small green alfalfa leaves that are tasty to my chickens and guineas and gives them hours of time spent scratching and digging to search them out. They wont get this from pellets.
Also I also buy a large bag of deer carrots in the fall. Very cheep and I toss about three carrots a day in the feeder pan and they literally peck them to just the nubs by the end of the day . My yolks are orange like a carrot, and again I dont shred the carrots as pecking them apart also takes time. They need stuff to do in the winter to beat boredom.
