I have a 3 gallon waterer and with hanging the light directly over the waterer it didn't freeze until it got down to -27 with -50 wind chill. Then it froze up some but not even all the way. If you have a heat lamp hanging over the side where the spout is it usually keeps the spout and the water inside thawed enough where they can at least drink some. My heat lamp is pretty low...only a few inches above the handle of the waterer. My chickens won't come out either and so they are getting so bored and tired of this weather they are starting to pull out each others feathers and eating them
I just can't wait until this weather is over!
OH and by the way. It was froze solid outside until we kicked it free and thawed it out. And id did not crack at all
