Want to know what people think of heated plastic waterers (3gallon)

I have a 3 gallon waterer and with hanging the light directly over the waterer it didn't freeze until it got down to -27 with -50 wind chill. Then it froze up some but not even all the way. If you have a heat lamp hanging over the side where the spout is it usually keeps the spout and the water inside thawed enough where they can at least drink some. My heat lamp is pretty low...only a few inches above the handle of the waterer. My chickens won't come out either and so they are getting so bored and tired of this weather they are starting to pull out each others feathers and eating them

I just can't wait until this weather is over!

OH and by the way. It was froze solid outside until we kicked it free and thawed it out. And id did not crack at all

I think I am confused.... Yes I have a open dog water dish...I think I jumped in too soon...

Would it be possible for someone to post a photo or point me to a photo of the heated water that hangs from the ceiling....? thanks

OMG!!! NO way !!! thanks so much for sending me the photo !!
I am happy I jumped in blindly in this thread!!!

I am going to definetely check this one out more...it could make my life even easier !!! Imagine the possibilities !!! thanks again....

A friend gave me a heated plastic dog dish (very large one) with a built in thermostat that heats to 25Watts. My existing waterer the plastic red base with round top fits perfectly into this open dog dish. This morning our temp got down -2 degrees. I noticed a thin ice coating formed on the waterer but every day prior to this it has worked like a charm. I keep it up on wood blocks and a square patio block on top of the wood. It has been working out very well so far.

HI again

Well it's been -30 C here for about 4 days and the waterer is doing great! It hasn't frozen at all. Can't say the same for me and the birds though
