Yup I have had several Mt. Dews already and am on a streak...hey at least I ain't streaking!

And Howdy welcome to the fray! I like milo, corn, wheat, and a little sunflower in mine

I heard that feeding table scraps is okay, is that true & if so what are some of the absolutely forbidden foods to give to them? So far I have only tried lettuce, cooked rice & hard boiled eggs. My chicks & ducks are going on 6 weeks old now. Of course I still feed them the chick food for their age group.

If you can eat it, they can eat it. The only caveat I would add is not too much really salty food-ie chips, crakes, etc. Too much salt can be a problem.
When we clean out the fridge everything goes in a big bowl & it goes to the chickens-the seem to like it-it's gonr on minutes.

WELL FIRST AND FORMOST
one has to know how to figure the protein level of grains

go to ;ionsgrip for the informaion on what to put in the mix and what amts of proteins in the grains

You would use a weighing measure such as
1 qt of
corn, oats, wheat and milo if using that, also the crumbles or pellets can be used in the mix

Example:
Say you make a mix that is three parts wheat,
one part corn and one part oats. You want to
know how much protein is in the mix.

GRAIN PARTS PROTEIN % (see list below)

Wheat 3 X 12.5 = 37.5
Corn 1 X 9 = 9
Oats 1 X 12 = 12

TOTALS 5 58.5

58.5 divided by 5 = 11.7% Protein
in mix

notice here they used more wheat as the most ingriedient
meaning it is higher in protein value than corn or oats

Might I suggest that not using Milo as it depletes the chickens body of Vit A and is not as good for chickens as the other grains

you can study these informative bits of feed information on the lionsgrip site

Introduction to Protein.
Protein is like "building blocks" for making animal and plant tissue. Animals' bodies are very largely composed of protein. Whenever birds are growing, or producing eggs, or sperm as in the roosters' case, they use up a LOT of protein. This protein must be gotten in the diet. Since living organisms are extremely complex, there are literally billions of different types of protein molecules.

Protein molecules are composed of smaller molecules called amino acids. There are only 22 known kinds of amino acids. Just as the 26 letters of the alphabet can make billions of words, so the 22 amino acids can make billions of kinds of proteins.

Most of the 22 amino acids can by synthesized in animals' bodies out of other foods they eat. But eight of the amino acids cannot be synthesized by animals, only by plants. These are famously known as the "Eight Essential Amino Acids." Animals must get these by eating other animal tissue, or by eating plants.

i WOULD LIKE TO FIGURE THIS AMT OF PROTEIN USED IN YOUR MIX
(1) corn would be 50 times 9 =450
(2 )wheat 30 times 12.5 = 375
(3) Blk sunflower seeds 10x 26.3=52.60
(4) Oat groats (would be hgigher
in protein than whole but will
use the whole amt 10x14 =140
********************
total amt of protein is 1017.6
this divided by 100 lbs
this would be a little over 10% protein given you are using oat groats
Then if you mix a protein supplement with this you should have about 16% protein

Glenda L Heywood : Hi, I dont understand your post to well was that post for me? The scratch grain comes out to 10% protein..
I mix that with a 20% breeder pellet and 32% fish pellet when Im done it comes out to around 18% protein....

Ive got 2 Red Shavers and they were feral but learning fast, theyre quite happy to eat scratch & pellets but basically refuse the mash, they get all our table scraps and i make up pots of swollen barley which i soak overnight in my slowcooker so its nice & plump & warm in the morning. Is oats in this form with the rest of there diet ok?

Try not to feed to much lettuce as it has a high water count and in large amounts can cause the runs. Another one is when you do your dinner veges put all the peelings etc in a pot, boil them up till soft drain most of the liquid then breakup a slice of bread or add a sprinkle of scratch, as long as your veges are soft & cooked they should eat it. Ours had leftover soup, bread, cooked potato peelings & leftover savoury mince for their dinner. Advocados are poisonous to all birds in all forms.
