Hi there,

It seems that this site/forum is quite helpful and friendly on BYC. I would love to hear some insights on how to start.
- I am in the Spring/Woodlands, Texas. How do I know if the city allows raising chicken in my backyard?
- Where can I go to buy some chicks
- What are few things that I must know to get started?

My mom stays at home all day without doing much as she is now a sweet elderly person. Loves chicken and I think it will be a good therapy for her (and us) along with getting healthy eggs and having them well taken care of.

Looking forward to some guidance.

Hi Marcia, Welcome to Backyard Chickens. Unless your mom is disabled, there is no reason for a sweet elderly person to stay home and not do much.Does she live alone?
Is she depressed or unhappy about her situation?

I don't know if I qualify as a sweet person but, I am elderly. I spend hours on BYC every day of the year. I'm guessing I am older than your mom, as you sound like you are quite young.

The best way to find out if the city allows chickens in your backyard, would be to visit your town/ city hall and ask them. IF your mom loves chickens, and you are allowed to have them please include her in any coop/chicken plans . I hope you are helping her with meals and housework, so adding chickens to her routine won't overtax her.

For local chicken laws and ordinances in owning fowl call your local planning commission of your town. Can look up online.
I would reiterate the importance of reading up on articles in the Learning Center to educate yourself in how to raise chickens. :)
You can purchase chickens locally, from breeders, or hatcheries. I personally like hatcheries because you can purchase chickens that are vaccinated against Mareks disease on day one for small fee which protects your chickens against the number one killer of chickens. Only prevention available to protect your flock.
