I am looking for really dark chocolate egg layers. I was told the Black Copper Marans were the thing. Then I learned they can average around a 4 on the color scale. Then I was told about Black Birchens. Are they Marans too?

Bottom line, I would really appreciate dark chocolate layers.

Thank you in advance,
Misty

Misty The Black Copper Marans coloring will vary over time. It might start at a 7 or 8 for example and then slide to a 5 or 6 after it's been laying a while. Generally the darkest of the eggs are laid in the early spring. The important thing to know is not "how dark the egg you hatch from" but how dark was egg that the hen first laid in the season. Now that alone doesn't always promise you will have a dark egg layer but it "ups" the opportunities for a dark egg. I hope I've helped you and not confused you! If you need more help, please pm me.

We do have BCM eggs for sale. I can still fill orders through late Fall and hopefully beyond as we did last year. I'll be posted a new BST soon. We've been filling a lot of pick up of eggs. Here's a recent BST listing. Please feel free to pm me if you're interested. I'll either post another listing, or you can just buy directly if you like.

Thanks and have a blessed day!

We have Black Coppers laying now. Alot of people will tell you how dark an egg their birds HAVE laid and when you get the eggs they are light as can be. Here are pics of what ours are laying now.
