WANTED: least crappy roost for small coop

Those little bitty cops are hard to work with aren't they. But you have what you have.

Is there any way you could add on a run on the side so you could put the pop door on the side instead of in the floor? It would not have to be much, just enough that they could get out and down to that area underneath and back up. Then put your nests in one end of the coop and two roosts on the other end spaced at 12" apart. Then just use the bottom of your coop on that end as the droppings board.

You could probably hang food and water underneath, even in Indiana winters if you block it off so the feed doesn't get wet from rain or snow blowing in. Not sure how you'd provide access.

You might think it's a sneaky attempt to get BEK to add a little more run space, 3x6 is pretty small. I don't know how many chickens are involved. But I just don't like doors in the floor. You lose coop space, how do you get the chickens up and down without taking up more run space, bedding can fall through, I just don't see much to recommend them.

Ah, now I see the reference to floor door!
Agrees waste of space and causes other problems.

heir access to new run will be through a floor door in front right corner of what used to be the run.

4 birds.
I have 5, 1.5yr old production reds (plan to cull the one nonlayer soon), leaving me with 4.

This post really got me thinking, and I'm only 1/2 way through first cup of coffee, so thinking is extra hard ;)

I think going back to my not wanting to mess with the coop's structural integrity is a major reason in going with a floor door. I agree, loss of coop/run space, bedding challenges (I have some construction time ideas to address these challenges, will share when I'm to the point of pictures rather than just words)

Okay, so I think what I might be able to do to try and work in your idea is this...get my new additional run set up next week and configured around coop, then see if back wall (where feeding tube currently is) could be a place for a small pop door to be cut. This is the only side of coop that would easily accommodate being cut on - all other sides have existing door, hardware cloth, nesting box that could pose more challenges for this chicken newbie.

How do you cut multiple quotes from different posts in your response?!?!
BYC goals!!! :bow (see...i even had to edit to get you included in what I thought was a response to YOU. Ha!)

So here's what rigged poop board looks like for now:

I had a Y-shaped limb that fit perfectly in coop to keep board from shifting or bowing.

Could something similar to this work if I cut the board to proper size, and made a small track on either side of coop to slide it in and out...?

I guess I'm just concerned about taking up more flapping space - physics would say the angled board gives them more room to move, including their poo; a flat board would allow less flap space but keep poo more in place.

Oh what a crappy conundrum :hmm

I use the multi-quote function and/or edit and/or copy and paste those quotes in my reply.
But I am on a laptop, not sure of functionality if you're on a mobile device.
@KikisGirls is the master of that stuff.

I'm not a fan of my mobile phone. Sorry.

I would guess the quoting works the same on the phone though.
Just try clicking QUOTE on each message you want to quote
then insert them all at once?

Sorry..I really don't know and I really don't want to have to sign in on my phone to figure it out.

Click +quote on each post you want to quote then click insert quotes and they'll all pop up in your reply box... or for just a line in a post you want to quote, long-touch and highlight the bit you want to quote and quote/reply option pops up... don't click reply unless you only want to reply to a single post...

Also, if you use your phone in portrait position, try turning it sideways, some things are only available when screen is wider than it is tall...

Mobile works exactly the same as PC/laptop/Ipad, just some options are not available due to smaller screens...
