Hi everyone! I am new to BYC, and just wanted to introduce myself. I am from a small town in Wisconsin, and just started with chickens about a week ago. I have four Roosters, and will be getting my Hens the first week of June. So any and all advice and tips you may have are much appreciated. I look forward to talking with and learning with you!

Hello and welcome from Ohio!

I just wanted to mention, that a good ratio of rooster to hens is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. So if you're getting 40 hens, then you're in good shape. Otherwise, you may want to re-home some of those roosters. The reason is that roosters like to mate very frequently, and chicken mating can be very rough. If you have too many rooster, the hens can become over mated. This will not only make your hens feathers look raggedy, it can affect egg production because the hens will become stressed.

It's such a shame because the roosters are always the most beautiful......

Just something for you to consider.....

Take care,
Sharon
