Starvation and being eaten alive are just a couple of nature's population control methods. Nature works on a boom & bust method. During good times populations explode beyond the carrying capacity of the land leading to starvation during famine and drought.

Predators do not humanely kill nor do they wait for the victim to be dead before beginning to eat them.
