Wanting a roo.

I have black aussies and production red hens, and id like a rooster. Ideally a roo that is reasonably personable, so i can handle him if need be, but....well...roo enough to run off some stray dogs and cats so my girls can free range. The dogs and cats arent a huge issue, but if one does wander up id like to know i have a feathered assistant. What breed would yall suggest?

There's no specific breed... it depends on the personality of the roo.... you can choose some big game birds as they are known for being strong and aggressive a bit..... but a roo won't actually attack cats or dogs... but will alert anyone for danger... and will observe the ground and the sky for dangers and make specific sounds to alert the girls.... usually will chase off other roosters and birds but not dogs!!

Im further north than houston, about two hours (beaumont is the closest "big city") what kind of roos are they ?

It really depends on the rooster. Its a flight or fight thing but will definitely alert to danger. Best of luck on your rooster ventures.

One is a Cuckoo Maran, the other is an Easter Egg layer. Both get along very well together. The Cuckoo loves to crow and is very proud of himself! The only reason why I have to part with them is that Dallas does not allow roosters in city limits. You really seem to love your feather babies, and I would very much like to see them go to a good home. How far would you be willing to drive to meet me? Beaumont is 4 hours from Austin. Could we meet in Conroe?

Oh my word-theyre gorgeous! I wont have my car tomorrow, and conroe is an hour from the school hubby will be at-let me talk tp him (im imagining gorgeous ba/ee or prod red/cukoo babies.....) and ill message you if it works out, theyll be absolutely rotten by next week; mine get 11am snack time love every day!
