Wanting chicks but what if I end up with roosters?

If you know what breeds you want then get them, VanillaShake. No sense in looking at a flock of Red Stars or Black Stars, fairly utilitarian chickens, while you sigh, "I could have had Silkies and Polish instead".

If you want all pullets. And dont want to deal with accadental cockerals. You are a first time chicken owner. Want a chicken that is vigerous early maturing and turns out to be a great layer. I vote you buy Red sex linked pullet chicks or Black Sexed link pullet chicks. If you can find them in a farm store try 2 or 3 of both.

Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens.

If you live in the city and like your neighbors you probably don't want roosters. Now the roosters have more personally than the hens. I live on an acre in the city and have a dozen roosters but I have to lock them in the barn every night lest they crow and disturb me and my friends.

The city told me I couldn't have chickens so when they gave me a citation I hired our chicken loving ex Governor and fought the city and had our zoning ordinance ruled vague and ambigious and therefore the judge said my chickens were legal. Over the last 8 months The Historic City of Roswell Georgia has spent over $80,000 trying to get rid of my chickens and had a new amended zoning ordinance but we are still fighting them. The problem is we have strong group of supporters and even our Mayor has chickens infront of his law office on the city square.

If you buy from a local breeder like me most can feather sex them at a few weeks of age to insure you get hens. ll of the extra roosters get fed corn for a while and then permanently go to a place I tell "city folks' is called Freezer Camp.

God Bless America and Little Roosters!

I ordered 10 chicks from Ideal Poultry here in Texas. They arrived in great condition and are now 14 months old. I ordered 3 different breeds (sex-links, austrolorp, and speckled sussex) and all turned out to be hens. We also ordered, in May, 6 ducklings and they too all turned out to be hens. The ducklings also came in great condition and reached laying age. I was to afraid to purchase from TSC because of the way they are cared for and how easy it is for chicks to be picked up and placed in another breeds bin. You just never know what you're going to get.

Good luck with your endeavorer.
