Wanting to add to my existing flock

In your situation I'd go with sex links. My two red sex links are quiet, friendly and prolific layers. The other bonus is that there is no chance you'll end up with a mis-sexed roo because they are color sexed at hatch, not vent sexed.

I have never owned sexlinks so I cannot say. Brahmas and orpingtons will go broody but if you don't have a roo...they will be setting on air and be miserable. My suggestion is leghorn. My leghorns are quite and quizical.

The vote count now sits at:
Barred Rock - 2
Leghorn - 2
Silkie - 1
Speckled Sussex - 1
Brahma - 1
Sex Links - 1

No votes for the Faverolles.

I wish I could have ALL of them!

Speaking of chicken noises, my EE Elsie is normally pretty quiet, but since Penny died, Elsie has started CROWING from time to time. It's a sad, pathetic sort of a crow, but she's really giving it her best.

It's HILARIOUS! She's still laying eggs, so I think it's more of a dominance thing than that she's turning into a Ren or a Hooster or something.

Any thoughts on my other questions -
Is it better to introduce 3 birds or 2 birds to the 2 I already have?
What about the run expansion idea?

Thanks again, everyone!

I think it's easier when the youngsters outnumber the adults so if you get chicks go with the three and start intrductions around 12-weeks or so, but if you buy p.o.l. then 2-2 would be easier on your original girls.
