Wanting to learn Soapmaking.. have questions

I am new to soapmaking and am ordering supplies to start my first attempt. I was going through the resource thread (which is great by the way!!!) and I was wondering, do I need food grade lye or does tech grade work? It's cheaper but I don't want to mess it up. Help from you all would be greatly appreciated.

food grade lye?

you want 100% sodium hydroxide. the stuff with the foaming agent is volitile and dangerious, just pure lye.
