Wanting to sprout....

I mixed mine together after I checked germination. (wheat, kamut, split peas, lentils, buckwheat, barley) My first try I had the scratch grains with cracked corn and it sprouted ok, but the corn made a slimy goopy mess by day 3 and was fermenting and moldy..yuck! I found that the milo seed in it did not sprout well at all either. All the wheat and sunflower seeds sprouted.
If you are gonna mix, think about what has similar soaking times as well...I added some black rice and soaked the 6 hrs, and it exploded inside out! I need to do some more testing if i'm gonna add that in.
The Asian market was WAY cheaper than going to Whole Foods. The feed mill nearby also has some seed by the pound, but it was for planting and had a anti fungal coating...not for eating. I only have 6 birds to sprout for, so I don't need much at one time. Amazon.com has a lot of options too.

I learned the hard way that barley and rye are not to be fed to chickens. There is some non-nutritional ingredient in those grains that gets thick in the hens digestive system, and keeps important nutrients from being absorbed, thus stops or slows down egg laying.

Sprouting or fermenting will break down the anti-nutrients so the nutrition in these grains can be absorbed. I especially like to sprout barley, and my chickens love it.

I do have 2 more questions. 1. Are there any I can mix together while sprouting? 2. I have wheat, milo, BOSS, and oats...back to 1st question and should I not even try with any of those 4?

As AUtiger states, best to check your germination rate AND TIME before mixing. For example, if germination rate is high, but you find that it takes one seed 2 days longer to reach "serving stage" then you could start that one on Monday, and add the others on Wednesday. Generally, I find that if their maturity rates are not similar, I like to sprout them separately. All of those grains should be great for sprouting. One thing to be aware of is that some seeds are heat treated. Obviously, those will not sprout.

Split peas will not sprout, b/c they have been split. Milo takes about a week to sprout. (at least when planting it in the garden) Rice usually has the hull removed, so is very unlikely to sprout.

Alright so the route I'm going is good. I've got them all separated and will just take note of what starts to sprout first before I mix.

I did remove all cracked corn so hopefully no goopiness.

Thanks Lazy Gardener and AUtiger
