They will go in by themselves at dusk not a problem. Getting them in during the day can be a bit trickier. If you have your coop set up so you can sort of pressure them along a fence and then into the coop it helps a bunch. If the coop is sort of in the middle of nowhere it can turn inot a chicken rodeo in a hurry.
 
I just began letting mine out as well, on a regular basis. I have found the only way to get them back in, is for them to come in @ night. My girls are all very independent and most don't follow me when I have treats, if they are free-ranging. I guess they love it more than treats

I also have to lock up my dog, so I don't like to keep him pinned up too long. We have a 6ft fence and they don't even seem interested in flying over.
